Driving with Eddie

Come along as I drive to the store on Christmas Eve day. I talk about the idea of aural history mentioned by Dave Slusher as he refers to Susan Kitchens’ site - Family Oral History.

The music is from Jeff Wahl
Happy Holidays, ya’ll…

hey there! I found this reference to the site — now launched!!!! First podcast is up, tho it’s still a huge audio file and not a podcast till I tweak the feeds to have it as an enclosure. (later this weekend). Anyway, I’m glad that you find the concept intriguing. I enjoyed listening to your trip to the store and ruminations about how the same tools that can do podcasting can help you collect the memories of your elders (and yourself).

I actually hadn’t thought about ‘casting the recordings themselves till I heard Dave and you mention it. There are some differences: For preservation for decades into the future, I’d recommend saving them as uncomressed audio. Consider what kinda players will be in use 80 years from now. Audio CD has lasted over 25 years, which, in a swiftly-changing industry, is a long time. Many other formats have died out. MP3 is great for current-day distribution, but I hope beyond hope that it’s not the only form of the recording. (I want to dig deep into this issue on my site)

Hey Susan! Thanks for listening and congratulations on launching the site! I listened your podcast and really liked it - especially the clips from your Grandpa. I was surprised when he said that his parents had not passed down any strories to him…

I agree that the archival format is tricky. Sometimes I think that a media player should be archived with the audio/video medium to ensure that it can be heard/seen! Or at least there should be a store of old media players available. I look forward to a discussion about this..
